Interview: 10 Questions with the AWESOME David Jablow!

10 Questions with David Jablow
1.... what medium and tools do you use to create art?
For the Doodle pad drawings I use disposable ink pens, microns and Copic pens, usually. Sometimes I'll also use correction fluid pens or white-out but I try to avoid that as much as possible.
2.... can you describe your creative process when making art?
I'll start with a few rough thumbnail sketches first.. Then move onto the doodle sheets. They're a found vintage object so I have a finite number of them.. I try to work slowly and carefully. If I screw one up that's it. I can't go to the art supply store and replace it.
3.... what helps boost your creativity?
I wish I knew. I think that being relaxed and not trying to make every piece a masterwork helps. Self doubt and criticism can certainly impede creativity.
4.... what helps you maintain focus and motivation when creating?
Having a clear cut goals.. and small ones. I try to keep focused on a few pieces at a time. I'm currently working on an old vintage pad that has roughly 50--60 sheets on it.. If I think to much about that I'll never get through them.. I just try and get through one at a time.
5.... what is the secret to creating a great piece of art?
Who knows?.. To make something that people will respond to you basically need to either draw/paint something in an interesting way..or just draw/paint something that is itself interesting..if you can do both even better. But what's interesting varies depending on who you ask..
6.... do you feel its important to follow your passion in your career?
I think it's important for everyone to express their passions somehow.. If that's as a career, great. I've heard people say the key to life is figuring out what you love to do then figure out how to get paid for it. That sounds like good advice to me.
7.... how and when do you get your best ideas?
Ideas usually come to me when I'm working on other art.. If I sit and try to 'brainstorm' nothing will happen.
8.... who are your favorite artists?
I have too many to list.. I'm certainly heavily influenced by comics, Mad Magazine, illustration and cartoons. But I certainly have been inspired and influenced by plenty of the old masters..
9.... do you offer workshops for artists?
I don't normally. I have on occasion done short workshops with kids in local community groups.. Nothing with any focused assignments or curriculum,
10.... if you could give other artists one piece of advice what would it be?
Put the work first. Get it done and put the time in. Keep at it..etc.. Don't put too much of your energy into hustling, networking and marketing yourself. If the work is good and shows sincerity it will naturally draw attention and reach other people.

Frank Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi's "Fire and Ice" animation is on of my all time FAVORITE animations for TONS of reasons: James Gurney and Thomas Kinkade painted the background (be sure to check out my past posts about this!), its based off the artwork of the GENIUS Frank Frazetta and its just plain AWESOME just to name a few.
So I was very EXCITED to learn that one of my favorite directors Robert Rodregez plans to remake a live action version of the film after he completes "Sin City 2" (according to geeksofdoom.com). Apparently Robert is also a huge fan of Frank Frazetta!
I recently came across two great videos. The first Robert Rodregez talks about plans to remake the animated classic!
The second video Robert Rodregez takes us through a tour of some of Frazetta's masterpieces!
Its such an exciting time for Frazetta fans! The Frazetta museum is reopening, the official website is back online and now a live action remake of "Fire and Ice" by ROBERT RODREGEZ! AWESOME!

As the boys vie for her attention, Impossibear finds a mysterious stick that sprouts unforeseen consequences from Chris's forehead. Chris discovers that with great power, comes great responsibility—and lots of emotion.
"Ultra Wankershim" Breaking the laws of physics, Wankershim has left the Holo-John and is now taking up residence in NeoMars Park... and he's growing at an exponential rate. Meanwhile, an old friend returns to share with Chris a vision of the future, and to tell the Bravest Warriors that it's ALWAYS been Wankershim.
"Catbug"
When the Bravest Warriors receive mysterious gifts from the See-Through Zone, they must use their wits to unlock the door to the greatest secret. In this season finale, there promises to be more emotion, Catbug, and delicious peanut butter squares than ever before.

Wonderful animation from the 2013 bachelor films from the "Animation Workshop" school! Hilarious and sweet! This animation is spectacular and a pefect way to start the weekend!
From the Animation Workshop site:
Trootpout is part of a small band of invisible creatures that play the mood quiet young man named Olaf, but his excited spontaneous sounds often disrupt the melody of the others. Therefore they decide to expel him.

Animation: Amazing Animated Movies Created with the FREE 3D Blender Software!
I've posted before how amazing the Blender 3D software is. So I thought now would be a great time to show the huge potential this FREE software has.
Every other year just about the Blender Foundation puts together an amazing animated shrot film. To push the limits of the softwares potential and at the same time improving the software.
I cant say enough great things about blender and all its amazing posibilites. A true gift to the art community! Download Blender and start making your own amazing animations today!
Elephants Dream (2006)

From Blender Foundation site:
Project Orange, the first Open Movie, started in September 2005 and premiered end of March 2006. The ambitions and targets for Orange were set very high, the character animation system had to be fully recoded, the rendering system needed a lot of upgrades, and most of all: a node-based Compositor was required.
Elephants Dream was co-produced with the Netherlands Media Art Institute, who challenged the team to explore an abstract concept and storyline. This 10 minute short shows two people who explore a strange mechanical world, with each an entire own perception on what's actually there. The emotional ending shows once more the violent impact of mixing reality and fantasy.
Big Buck Bunny (2008)

From Blender Foundation site:
Project Peach, the second Open Movie, started in October 2007 and premiered April 2008. Target this time was to create good hair/fur editing and rendering, more advanced support for cartoonish characters, and solve complexity in rendering outdoors environments with grass, trees and leaves.
Big Buck Bunny was the first project in the Blender Institute Amsterdam. This 10 minute movie has been made inspired by the best cartoon tradition. A giant rabbit finds his happy sunny morning walk being disturbed by three rascal rodents. In a comical grand finale he gets even with them.
Sintel (2010)

From Blender Foundation site:
Project Durian was the third Open Movie, which started in september 2009 and premiered at the Netherlands Film Festival end of september 2010.
With a much larger team and bigger budget, the targets were very ambitious, resulting in a 15 minute short film that has found much acclaim on the web. Especially story telling and editing has been paid much attention to.
Tears of Steel (2012)

From Blender Foundation site:
In the period of March 2012 - September 2012 the 4th movie project has been realized in the Blender Institute, Amsterdam. Theme: vfx & realistic rendering.

Animation: Tony McVey's Super Cool "Gardens of Miranda" Episode 1

Tony McVey is at it again! Last week I posted Tony's amazing "Skull Island" video (if you have not seen it be sure to check it out!). I then discovered he is hard at work on a second stop-motion animation project!

From Tony's Blog:
"At long last, after 3 years of work, Episode 1 of Gardens of Miranda is finished. I spent the first year writing, designing and constructing models, props and puppets, followed by 2 years of animation.
Shooting this proved to be a true learning process and I'm looking forward to putting all of it to use on episodes 2 and 3, which I expect to average around 2 minutes in length. There was a lot of exposition to work into episode 1, something that won't be as true for successive installments, so the pacing will pick up and include more characters and action sequences and a darker tone overall."
Check it out!
Gardens of Miranda Episode 1 from Tony McVey on Vimeo.

I'm very excited to check out the second two animations, especially if they contain more characters, more action and darker tone?! Yes please, haha!

Be sure to check out his site http://tonymcvey.blogspot.com/ for updates on production of these awesome animations and lots of behind the scenes info! Keep up the great work Tony!

Animation: Pendleton Ward's "Animation Pals"

I'm just learning about the animation giant Pendleton Ward's work. I don't have cable so the super addictive cartoon network show "Adventure Time" created by Pendleton hasn't reached me.....yet!

I say yet, because if his animations on cartoon network are as fun and hilarious as his online creations then I will be a super fan of "Adventure Time" just like the rest of the planet.
But for now I have to say his "Animation Pals" online videos are cracking me up! Be sure to check them out!
His other creations are just as impressive too. Be sure to checkout Cartoon Hangover online series "Bravest Warriors" also created by Pendleton Ward! Super cool and fun!

Animation: "The Goon" Animated Film

"The Goon" animated film looks like it is going to be amazing!! A little bit about the film from the Blur Studio site:
"Producer David Fincher and Blur are teaming up to bring The Goon, the Dark Horse comic book created by Eric Powell, to the big screen! Actor Paul Giamatti will lend his voice as Franky, the Goon’s sidekick as they face off numerous evil zombie gangs. "Even the undead fear--THE GOON!""
Last year there were a lot of awesome looking trailers floating around the internet. When I finally got to see one of the "sample footage" trailers I was blown away.
Usually animated CGI films are aimed at kids. But be warned this is no kids movie! The trailer it self is pretty hardcore so be warned, unless you like exploding zombie heads, haha!
With the sucess of their recent KickStarter campain they have raised funds for the projects goal which was posted as:
"The next step of our plan is to begin the filmmaking process by producing a feature length STORY REEL based on Eric Powell's amazing script. (a story reel is a rough edit of storyboards combined with music and sound effects) This will give Hollywood a complete look at the Goon film's potential... from his early life in the carnival to busting heads in the mysterious town with no name. We all know the Goon's incredible story, the over-the-top action, hilarious comedy and genuine heart, but now it's time for Hollywood to experience it as well."
I'm SUPER excited about the film being created and really hope it gets made! I love the idea of more awesome CGI films being made for older audiences!
Also, another awesome product of the movies early stages are some really wonderful concept artworks being created by the super talented Sean McNally! All in all I'm a huge fan of this movie being made! All around AWESOME!!!!

Animation: James Gurney's "Fire and Ice Film" Blog Posts

One of my favorite series of posts on James Gurney's LEGENDARY Blog was the post he made on working with Frank Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi on the 1983 Fire and Ice film.
The film is amazing for so many reasons. The movie alone is a great! Then to find out the people who worked on the film is even more amazing. Ralph Bakshi based the movie off of Frank Frazetta's paintings! Then they bring in none other than James Gurney and Thomas Kinkade (yes! the painter of light) to do the background paintings for the film.

This is mind blowing! Be sure to check out all the great photos, behind the scenes stories and pranks James posts about on his blog!

Part 3: Fire and Ice -- Tom Kinkade

Also be sure to check out the making of video. It shows a young James Grurney and Thomas Kinkade before they become superstars!

Animation: The Hobbit (Animated 1977) Trailer Remix

The animated 1977 Hobbit television movie was a classic! I loved this film so much and with the amazingly awesome new live action Hobbit movie out I'm excited to view the cartoon classic again.
Even better, I recently came across MooseBoy's super cool fan made trailers. He uses the live action dialog of the new Hobbit films to create trailers with scenes of the classic 1977 animated Hobbit movie. What you get is a classic new trailer for a classic old film! Enjoy!

Animation: Mario Goes Berserk!

Awesome piece of animation and so hilarious! Not sure who the artist is, but looks like it was done for "Dorkly's youtube page". Really awesome stuff, especially if you are a retro gaming fan like me!
*warning, this is a bit gory and vulgar, but awesome!

Animation: MTV Liquid Television Online: Running Man

One of the greatest things about the 1990's was MTV's Liquid Televison (link). They ran tons of off the wall, independent and "artsy" animations that were so cool your brain would explode. Also appearing on the MTV's Liquid Television were monster popluar shows like Beavis and Butthead and Aeon Flux. Both shows I'm a huge fan of.
In 2012 they put tons of these animations online for viewers to enjoy again on MTV's site! One in particular that was such an amazing masterpeice to watch was an episode I discovered called "Running Man." A section of the phenomenal film Neo Tokyo (link)
Its deep, its strange and it flat out kicks so much ass it should be illegal! One of the best finds of 2012 for me was MTV's throw back site in honor to the Liquid Television era greatness. THANK YOU!!!!
watch in hi-def on MTV's site (link)
