Maurice Sendak!  One of the GREATEST children's book illustrators of all time and by far the most influential children's book illustrators of our time.  I'm such a HUGE fan of Maurice Sendak and I have been trying to find a place online to view Spike Jonze's PHENOMENAL documentary interview/talks with Maurice for sometime.  I was thrilled to find out recently that Hulu has recently made the documentary FREE to view on their site!  Be sure to check out this very close and intimate documentary on one of the GREATS!

From "Tell Them Anything You Want" Wikipedia Page:

"Starting in 2003 Spike Jonze and his frequent collaborator Lance Bangs began to film a series of interview with author Maurice Sendak. Sendak spoke about his youth, family, thoughts on death, and his career and some of the controversies that came from his books Where the Wild Things Are and In the Night Kitchen."

10 Questions with Truck "100% Soft" Torrence

1.... what medium and tools do you use to create art?

I work mainly in Illustrator although I will sometimes start with a simple pencil or pen sketch and build on that. I also use Sketchup for doing quick mock-ups of scenes that may have some dimension to them.

2.... can you describe your creative process when making art?

I usually start out with a loose idea of whatever piece I want to do, and then I try and do a quick and dirty mock-up just to conceptualize what it's in my head to see if it will work. If it's going in a direction I like, i'll usually just keep molding and refining it until it's in the ballpark of what I had in mind. I will usually get to about 80% on a piece and then, if time permits, let it percolate for awhile. I'll then revisit and make some finishing touches and adjustments.

3.... what helps boost your creativity?

hi-chews, burritos, black moth super rainbow.

4.... what helps you maintain focus and motivation when creating?

Keeping a schedule and staying busy. Momentum is a hard thing to manufacture, so I try and work on art every day, even if it's just a doodle or something. A couple years ago, I started doing a weekly series called Throwback Thursdays where I draw a new memory and share it. I started doing it partially because I wanted to have new stuff to share with people, but it ended up being a really good way to maintain some personal diligence of setting out to do something every week and actually doing it, even if it isn't exactly what I wanted at the end of the day. It can be easy for me to sometimes go weeks without doing or sharing anything just because I don't think it's "good enough" or whatever, but sometimes in order to grow, you just need to put stuff out there I think. I became so entrenched in finishing my solo show I ended up having to pause my Throwback Thursdays for a few months while I completed all the work I had to do, so I think the practice ends up paying off in the long run if it's allowing me to put that energy into bigger things.

5.... what is the secret to creating a great piece of art?

oh man, please tell me once you figure it out. Some stuff hits harder than others, and it's hard to predict that. I just try and make stuff that I like and if it resonates with some people, that is great.

6.... do you feel its important to follow your passion in your career?

for sure! if you don't try it, you'll never know.

7.... how and when do you get your best ideas?

i've been struck with a lot of good ideas while i'm in the shower. I'm a real serious bather.

8.... who are your favorite artists?

right now i've really been loving Muxxi, Nicole Gustafsson, Yoko Honda, Andrew DeGraff . Michelle Romo/Crowded Teeth. Also this guy Jonpaul Douglass who has a great series called Pizza in the Wild.

9.... do you offer workshops for artists?

I haven't as of yet!

10.... if you could give other artists one piece of advice what would it be?

Good question. Well, it would probably be to watch the intro for the seminal documentary Manimal.
