10 Questions with  David Jablow

1.... what medium and tools do you use to create art?

For the Doodle pad drawings I use disposable ink pens, microns and Copic pens, usually. Sometimes I'll also use correction fluid pens or white-out but I try to avoid that as much as possible.

2.... can you describe your creative process when making art?

I'll start with a few rough thumbnail sketches first.. Then move onto the doodle sheets. They're a found vintage object so I have a finite number of them.. I try to work slowly and carefully. If I screw one up that's it. I can't go to the art supply store and replace it.

3.... what helps boost your creativity?

I wish I knew.  I think that being relaxed and not trying to make every piece a masterwork helps.  Self doubt and criticism can certainly impede creativity.

4.... what helps you maintain focus and motivation when creating?

Having a clear cut goals.. and small ones.  I try to keep focused on a few pieces at a time. I'm currently working on an old vintage pad that has roughly 50--60 sheets on it.. If I think to much about that I'll never get through them.. I just try and get through one at a time.

5.... what is the secret to creating a great piece of art?

Who knows?.. To make something that people will respond to you basically need to either draw/paint something in an interesting way..or just draw/paint something that is itself interesting..if you can do both even better.  But what's interesting varies depending on who you ask..

6.... do you feel its important to follow your passion in your career?

I think it's important for everyone to express their passions somehow.. If that's as a career, great.  I've heard people say the key to life is figuring out what you love to do then figure out how to get paid for it.  That sounds like good advice to me.

7.... how and when do you get your best ideas?

Ideas usually come to me when I'm working on other art.. If I sit and try to 'brainstorm' nothing will happen.

8.... who are your favorite artists?

I have too many to list.. I'm certainly heavily influenced by comics, Mad Magazine, illustration and cartoons. But I certainly have been inspired and influenced by plenty of the old masters..

9.... do you offer workshops for artists?

I don't normally. I have on occasion done short workshops with kids in local community groups.. Nothing with any focused assignments or curriculum,

10.... if you could give other artists one piece of advice what would it be?

Put the work first. Get it done and put the time in. Keep at it..etc.. Don't put too much of your energy into hustling, networking and marketing yourself. If the work is good and shows sincerity it will naturally draw attention and reach other people.
